July 12: Food banks set up across South Cariboo

Those looking for food and supplies have a new option set up at the Interlakes Community Centre at Roe Lake on Highway 24.

Jil Freeman, alongside some fellow volunteers, is set up at the centre with supplies available for free to evacuees or anyone inneed in the area.

“I saw over Facebook that there was a need for supplies in the area, from not only evacuees but also local residents becauseof the supplies that were diminishing at the store and also because there’s a need for people who aren’t working, so theydon’t have the means to be going and spending money on groceries right now,” she says.

In response, the group put out a request for food, and people from around the province have answered.

Yesterday, two volunteers drove to Kamloops to pick up supplies donated from a group of women who had put it togetherthemselves.

On July 12, shipments are arriving from the Kamloops Food Bank, as well as an organization in Salmon Arm, with more on theway tomorrow.

A Canadian Disaster Animal Response Team is also set up at the centre.

Later during the day on Wednesday, Freeman is organizing the delivery of some of these supplies to both the Lone ButteCommunity Centre and then tonight to the Forest Grove Community Centre, where residents will be able to stop by and pickthem up. As of Friday July 14 a food bank will also be available at the 70 Mile Community Hall on Bonaparte Road, open from11 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily.

Residents will also be able to stop by the Interlakes Community Centre for supplies.

“Right now we’ve got lots of water, dry food — noodles, cereals — some diapers, some feminine hygiene products, as well astoiletries and some baby formula and baby food,” she says.

Upcoming shipments will include diapers and wipes, as well as more produce, she says.

“We’ve asked for donations, diapers has been a huge one, coffee, milk, so if people are looking to donate we are definitelyaccepting more donations of perishable foods as well. We do have a cooler here. We are able to store stuff.”

For more information, people can get in touch with Freeman via her cell phone at 250-945-5102, via the InterlakesCommunity Centre at 250-593-4869 or via the Interlakes Community Centre’s Facebook page.

“I want people to know it’s not just for evacuees, it’s for anyone who is in need right now. Everyone’s going through a tryingtime with not working, so if anyone has a need don’t hesitate to come by and pick up what you need. That’s what it’s herefor.”

July 15: Anne Arman is at Lone Rocks Cafe (6022 Little Fort Hwy, 100 Mile House) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with meat and eggs.

Prescription refill:

There will be a prescription refill clinic held at the Lone Butte Fire Hall on Friday, July 14, in the hours from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The purpose of this clinic is to refill existing prescriptions for those people with stable, chronic conditions who are running out of their medications.

Two physicians will be in attendance, Dr. Gordon Hutchinson and Dr. Adrienne Montgomery, as well as medical office assistants. Prescriptions will be written and faxed to Kipp-Mallory pharmacy in Kamloops. The filled prescriptions will then be transported back to the Lone Butte Fire Hall to be available the next day.

Please note the following restrictions:

- They are unable to assess or treat acute medical conditions, as they do not have the equipment or space to do so. If you have an acute medical problem, you will have to travel to Kamloops or elsewhere for medical care. If it is an emergency, call 911.

- They are unable to fill prescriptions for narcotics or controlled substances.

- Please bring your existing prescription bottles with you, as well as identification, your Care Card and any information on third party insurance coverage for prescriptions. If there is a co-payment required, they will also need credit card information. The pharmacy will need this to process your prescriptions.

Veterinary open:

The Lakeland Veterinary Clinic is open regular hours for emergency veterinary needs. Their phone number is 250-395-3110. They can be accessed through Horse Lake Road.
